Affordable Grand Tour of Southern California:
West Hollywood, Palm Springs, San Diego
Affordable Grand Cruise of the Mexican Riviera
Affordable Grand Tour of Southern California
By Don Church & Tony Schillaci
If you want to escape the dreary winter, West Hollywood, Palm Springs and San Diego tourism officials have a grand tour equal to Europe's but at a far better cost.
This first-of-a-kind travel threesome is called GoGaySoCal. www.gogaysocal- .com . It comes just in the nick of time. While the continuing decline of the dollar makes overseas travel unaffordable for more and more Americans, being 'abroad' at home in the Mediterranean climate of Southern California is the bargain of the year.
But, first you've got to get a good deal on flights to keep down the total tab - even in dollars. The Internet-only airfares to LAX or San Diego from the Boston, Providence, Hartford and other East Coast cities can be as low as $250, round trip.
For economy, we always reserve a low-cost, sub-compact car and then try to get an upgrade by being very polite and patient at the car-rental desk. A warm 'hello' and a big smile is the way to approach the very people who can give you upgrades on cars and hotels.
SAN DIEGO
This beautiful ocean-side city is made up of neighborhoods not unlike New York, and, it too, has one of the greatest parks in the world. Balboa Park is home to the renowned San Diego Zoo, a dozen world-class museums, theaters, great restaurants and outdoor cafes. The Prado (www.cohnrestaurants.com)highly recommended.
For walkers, joggers and cyclists there are miles of roads, broad sidewalks and paths. Trolleys roll through the park all day, including ones that offer a two-hour city tour. Adjacent to the park is Hillcrest, one of the many LGBT neighborhoods. It has an abundant variety of gay and lesbian bars, clubs, restaurants, shops, and galleries in a colorful and festive village' setting. For lodging, a highly recommended hotel is Park Manor Suites on Balboa Park, (orsuites.com.) It was built in 1926 to 'serve' visiting silent film stars and was, in part, financed by movie money. Its intimate bar with nightly entertainment draws a largely gay crowd. The excellent rooftop restaurant with a panoramic view of the city and the Pacific Ocean becomes the city's most popular gay and lesbian club on Friday nights.
A brisk walk from the hotel is Kemo Sabe, (www.cohnrestaurants.com) imaginative California Cuisine with a dramatic flair. Hillcrest is the place to explore during the day and definitely before and after dinner.
The city's Gaslamp district has been resurrected into a bustling touch of old California and is a favorite with both locals and visitors. A little bit Greenwich Village, a little bit Barbary Coast; this is a place that rocks and rolls into the night. The Solamar hotel houses the Jsix restaurant, (www.jsixsandiego.com ) which has a unique modem vibe and some of the best food and service west of the Mississippi.
There are magnificent beaches (gay and nude, too) along San Diego waterfront from the Mexican boarder to the village of La Jolla, an elegant and friendly town that also offers excellent restaurants and hotels overlooking the ocean. We had a fabulous lunch at the Grand Colonial Inn's Nine Ten Restaurant (www.nine.ten.com) of simple salads and sandwiches that were brilliantly
prepared and served with panache. The inn's luxury, rooms and suites meander toward the blue Pacific. F or details about gay beaches, bars, clubs, restaurants and other venues, events and festivals, go to www.sandiego.org, click on 'visitor information' and then 'gay and lesbian visitor guide'. West Hollywood (WEHO) is still the heart and soul of LA's LGBT community. It's always ready for its close
up. The 1.9 square-mile town is adjacent to both Beverly Hills and Hollywood. Location, location, location. And it's the center of the arts, entertainment, design, fashion, lifestyle, culture, and nightlife. The legendary Sunset Strip, major Oscar parties and the homes of many stars are actually located in West Hollywood and not Hollywood or Beverly Hills, as some publicists would like you to believe. You're more apt to see stars on the move here than anywhere because there's more excitement per square foot than in the surrounding communities. And the young stars - gay and non-gay can't resist Stella McCartney's and other equally famous boutiques that have chosen to settle in WEHO. For LGBT visitors, we recommend the Ramada Plaza Suites (www.famadawh.com) for modestly priced rooms and suites and its location on Santa Monica Boulevard. A block away is the Chamberlain lywood.com all-suite-property for luxury seekers.
This is home to the successful Girls Bar and Palms for lesbians as well as other mixed venues. The latest rage is Eleven, a bar and restaurant for both gay men and lesbians and their best buds. For the best food and drinks, we recommend Melrose Bar & Grille (moderate), the Palm Restaurant - expensive. BEST steaks (www.thepalm.com). and Cafe Etoile (moderate). For the best and friendliest spa to the stars, go to www. the gendarmerie.com. It's located in a charming complex of old bungalows with a secluded courtyard. You never know which star will be sweeping in for a variety of expert services by some of the nicest people in WEHO. For a complete gay and lesbian guide go to www.gogaywesthollywood.com.
WEST HOLLYWOOD
PALM SPRINGS
This desert oasis has almost as much stardust as sand since silent screen stars 'discovered' it back in the 1920s, and it continues to be popular with movie, TV and recording stars today.
It also has a huge gay and lesbian population of business operators, retirees, trust-fund babies, wannabes, weekenders, and regular working folks. There are many gay and lesbian accommodations, including some that are clothing-optional in lushly landscaped compounds.
A typical one for men is. the first-rate Triangle Inn. WWW.triangle-inn. com. For women-only, we've been told by reliable sources that a good choice is Casitas Laquinta www. casitaslaquita.com.
For luxury-seekers, the Viceroy (www.viceroypalmsprings. com) is the place to stay. It's a secluded 5-star resort' that has attracted the glitterati going back to the Clark Gable
era. Private bungalows, spa services and other luxurious necessities are just a few of the reasons the rich and famous hideaway here. The newest watering spot in town is Mixie's Boy Bar - actually a girl bar for everyone - owned by Jill and her life partner, Victoria - DJ Mixie. It's the very first LGBT bar to open on South Canyon Drive - the center of the town's main drag. www.mixiespalmsprings.com
Next door is the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies (follies.com) now in its 17th smash year! The cast is made up of seasoned performers who are 55 to 84-years-old, and they are fabulous! Kaye Ballard is the current headliner (at 80+ years) of this lavish vaudeville-style show. After the show the star and cast greet the audience in the courtyard.
The hottest new LGBT place in town is the Tropicale Restaurant & Lounge, a modem supper club, at 330 E. Amado Road. It's a large, well-planned glamorous space with an attractive crowd of all ages. The fusion food, drinks, and service are top-notch. For LGBT travel pages, go to www.palm-springs.org and click on 'LGBT." You can also order a free gay guide.
In any season, a grand tour of Southern California is always action-and fun-packed in gay-friendly San Diego on the Pacific Ocean, Palm Springs in a star-studded desert oasis and West Hollywood's dazzling city lifestyle and show-biz glamour. © Copyright 1999 - 2008. You can fly to LA (West Hollywood) or San Diego from the East Coast on all major and minor airlines (Southwest’s Internet-only fare is usually the best buy) and enjoy the bonus of spending time in two of Southern California’s gayest, liveliest, friendliest towns before heading down Mexico way.

In a quest to find exciting gay destinations where the dollar still offers affordable getaways, Mexico stands out strongly on our gaydar.
In the most popular gay resort towns south of the border, drink and food prices are usually posted outside cafes and restaurants in pesos and dollars. But first, check the rate of exchange before leaving home... and while in Mexico before ordering the authentic local foods and drinks.
If you start in San Diego, you can easily add its infamous neighbor Tijuana to your itinerary. Take the Blue Line trolley for a few bucks from downtown San Diego for the 40-50 minute trip to the border crossing.
Walk across the bridge, take the first right and follow the signs to avenue Revolucion. Go into Plaza Santa Cecilia and check out El Ranchero and Villa Garcia for local information and all the wild foreign flavor anyone can hope to have in a single dose. Use your passport at gay bars and they will generally waive the cover charge. Muchos Gracias, amigos and amigas.
We don’t recommend driving through Mexico - too many banditos on desolate stretches of highway - but you can take one of the cruise ships for smooth sailing along Mexico’s Riviera, stopping for day-tripping and some overnights at popular Pacific ports that welcome gay visitors.
Norwegian Cruise Lines (www.ncl.com) seems to have the best prices of the major companies and offers delicious international cuisine, staff (incredibly friendly), entertainment (highly talented performers) and beautiful, clean interiors add up to great value and comfort. Gay men and women will love the daily Friends of Dorothy (FOD) get-togethers, which are posted in the ship’s daily newsletter!
For the lowest rates, check all the cruise line Web sites (inside cabins are the best buys) and compare them to the discount prices posted on www.VacationsToGo.com as well as other online discounters for rock-bottom prices. Be sure to read the small print regarding port taxes, security charges, fuel supplements, and gratuities as well as on-board perks such as free vouchers worth hundreds of dollars and upgrades. These leader items are sometimes used as sales incentives if a particular cruise is not selling well. They want a face in every porthole. So it pays to check.
If you are going to a specific Mexican destination for a getaway or an extended visit, flying is the way to go; all the major resort towns have airports and good local transportation. Always bargain with cab drivers; $3 to $6 seems to be the usual negotiated price to a local hotel. But do haggle! In English! They expect it!
The most popular gay-friendly destinations along Mexico’s Pacific Riviera are Acapulco, Zihuatanejo/Xtapia, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas. They have established communities (some small, some large) of gay men and women who own, manage, or work in many of the hotels, inns, bars, clubs, restaurants and other travel-related businesses in these truly friendly places. Stay tuned to your gaydar at all times.
Cancun and Cozumel Island along Mexico’s Caribbean coast each have a few gay bars and inns, and there is a long-established gay community in colonial San Miguel de Allende (140 miles northeast of Mexico City). The easiest way to get to these idyllic towns is by air. Cruise ships stop at the latter two, but that’s only for day-trips. Air/land packages are better for longer stays.
Acapulco: It has been a favorite of gay men since the 1940s and later with Hollywood’s leading men, many whom are now known to have been gay despite having wives and children — just enough to complete the cover story. Acapulco is still a great gay favorite and has gay bars, clubs, a gay beach on Costra Miguel Aleman between Beto’s restaurant and the Condesa Hotel. Strong swimmers (rough currents!) head for the ‘Rock’ for Show and Don’t Tell with the local males. You can party till the early morning hours at the gay clubs: Demas, Relax and Picante. As places open and close and new ones open, check with the wait staff for current happenings and directions. And don’t miss the famed cliff divers. It’s one of the most thrilling sights in Mexico! Norwegian Cruise Lines makes an overnight stop here so you can enjoy the glamorous nightlife of a 1950s jet-setter.
Zihuatanejo/Xtapia: its original name, Cihuatlan, means ‘place governed by women.
Zihua:as it’s called by locals and frequent travelers has been able to preserve its sleepy village vibe because buildings can be no higher than four stories. Adjacent Ixtapa, however, has high-rise hotels and upscale shopping. Zihua offers views of humpback whales and Green Ridley sea turtles. And it’s home to fishermen, artisans, waterfront bars and cafes. One block from downtown is Wild’s Club, the local gay and lesbian hangout that offers female impersonator shows and male strippers along with the usual fare.
For a taste of tropical luxury life, we highly recommend a stay or at least a fine lunch or dinner at The Tides (www.tideszihuatanejo.com), a 5-star resort on Playa La Ropa. It blends the casual elegance of a glamorous beachfront lifestyle with the seclusion of a lush garden retreat. Seventy-two stunning guestrooms and suites afford jungle and ocean views across a tranquil private beach. It has both indoor and outside, award-winning Mexican-Pacific cuisine, four swimming pools, an intimate spa and superb service. It is the perfect place for gay and lesbian luxury seekers.
Puerto Vallarta: This is the gay-capital of Mexico and the old town is the place to spend leisure hours. It’s got old-world charm with lots of open-air cafes, including gay bars, clubs and other cool places. One of its unique features is a very long and wide esplanade along its Pacific beachfront. It’s colorful, tree-lined, exceptionally clean, and has a vast collection of spectacular modern sculptures that are truly original. Bring a camera!
The recommended first stop is the Blue Sunset Rooftop Restaurant and Bar on the gay beach of Los Muertos. It has magnificent sunset views of Banderas Bay and during the day you can check out all the action on the beach. Cabo San Lucas: The harbor is filled with pleasure and sports fishing boats of all shapes, sizes and nationalities. A casual jaunt along the wide, well-landscaped pedestrian harbor-front walk reveals the best in tourist-oriented development we’ve ever seen in the world.
There are two gay bars: The Hangover bar/restaurant is in downtown on the Plaza del Sol on the second Floor and is open Tuesdays through Sundays. The other one is the Rainbow Bar, Cabo’s only alternative nightclub popular with gay men, lesbians, and cool non-gays. This is the new Mexico of diversity in places where young people party. The waiters are gorgeous, the drinks are fun (try the mango magico margarita and very serious martinis), and the crowds are friendly.
Visiting Mexico: Whether you go for a short or extended visit (Google ‘gay Mexico’) there’s no better reason to visit now than the current affordable prices. It’s one of few ‘foreign’ destinations that still offer good value for the Yankeed dollar!
